How to Register to Vote

Last updated 6/24/08

To register to vote, you must fill out a Florida Voter Registration Application Form. These forms are available on-line and at the locations listed below. If you cannot go to one of these locations, contact us and we will mail you a form. In addition to using these forms to register to vote, you can use them to notify us of a change in your address, name or party affiliation, or to update your signature.

To be eligible to register to vote in Brevard County you must be:

IMPORTANT: In order to be eligible to vote in any election, you must be registered to vote at least 29 days before that election, except as noted below.

If you or an accompanying family member of your family has been discharged or separated from the uniformed services, Merchant Marine, or from employment outside the territorial limits of the United States, after the book closing for an election (less than 29 days before the election), and if you are otherwise qualified, you may register to vote in the Supervisor of Elections office up until 5 PM on the Friday preceeding that election. You must produce sufficient documentation showing evidence that you qualify for late registration before you will be allowed to register.

When you fill out the registration form, you are required to give your name, residence address, date of birth and your Florida driver's license or identification card number or, if you do not have a Florida driver's license or identification card number, the last four digits of your social security number; you must also check the appropriate boxes to indicate that you are a U. S. citizen, that you are not a convicted felon (or, if you are, that your rights relating to voting have been restored), and that you have not been adjudicated mentally incapacitated (or, if you have been, that your competency has been restored). You are also required to sign the form. Any forms received without these items completed will be rejected as incomplete.

You will also be asked for, but not required to give, your gender, race, phone number, mailing address (if different from your residence address), the county in which you live, your former name if you are making a name change request, and the name and address where you where previously registered to vote, if applicable. You will also be asked if you require assistance to vote.

If you are registered to vote in another county in Florida, you do not need to register again in Brevard County; submitting an address change will automatically transfer your registration here. If you are registered to vote in another state and then you register to vote in Brevard County, you forfeit your right to vote in the other state; the appropriate election official in that jurisdiction will be notified of your registration in Brevard County. If you are registered to vote in Florida and you then register to vote in any other state, you forfeit your right to vote in Florida unless you re-register.

If you register by mail and do not have a Florida driver's license, Florida identification card or social security number, you are required to submit a copy of your photo identification along with your registration. If you do not do so, you must show identification the first time you vote after registering. Acceptable forms of identification and catagories of voters exempt from the requirement are listed on the ID Requirement for Mail Registrants page. If you are required to provide ID and you are unable to do so at the polls, you will be required to vote by provisional ballot; if you vote by absentee ballot and return your absentee ballot without a copy of your ID or without affirming that you are exempt from the requirement, your ballot will be rejected.

At the time of registration, each voter must declare his or her party affiliation. This can be to any political party registered with the Secretary of State's Office, or to no party. If a form is received with no party affiliation indicated, the voter will be registered with no party affiliation.

Florida is a closed primary state. This means that in partisan primary elections, you can only vote in races of the party in which you are registered. Thus, if you are not registered in a party that has primary races on the ballot, you can only vote on any nonpartisan offices or questions in a primary election. The exception to this is the case in which the only candidates who qualify for an office are from one political party; in this situation, all voters are eligible to vote on the contest -- this is called an Universal Primary. All registered voters can vote on all offices in a General Election, regardless of party affiliation.

You can change your party affiliation at any time, but if you change it when the registration books are closed for an election (within 29 days of an election), the change will not take effect until after the election. For more information on this, see the How to Change Your Name or Party Affiliation page.
